marine biology internship

The internship program is for people interested in work experience, gaining further insight to life as a marine biologist. The internships include elements to advance your knowledge and skills in field techniques, oversee volunteer training and even develop your own mini-research project. If you have particular requirements or interests, we can cater the internship for you.
Duration: 
between 4 and 12 weeks
Requirements:
Background in biology or
​enrollment in a biology degree
​No diving experience required

volunteer citizen science program

Ideal for a gap year excursion, career changers or simply if you're looking for a holiday with a meaningful contribution.
​Whether you're a seasoned diver or never been diving ever before, we can provide everything you need to be a knowledgable and confident diver and data collector. Take a look at a typical week 3 schedule, when everyone's dive courses are finished and we really get our teeth in to the research
Duration: 
between 2 and 12 weeks
Requirements:
Diving qualification required for
2 week volunteers
No diving experience required for 3+ week volunteers

marine biology fieldwork courses

Targeted for school groups and universities.
​The Marine Research Centre offers several courses, diving and non-diving, suitable for biology-based educational curriculum.
Provided by qualified and professional Marine Research Centre Staff.
Both pre-planned projects and custom-built projects available
Duration: 
between 2 and 12 weeks
Requirements:
Age 16+
Groups 2 - 30 at a time
no diving experience required

Our resident researchers offer consultancy and supervisory support to any undergraduate or postgraduate student, preparing a proposal or enrolled in a recognised education institute. 
Over the years, the marine research centre staff have supported numerous undergraduate, masters and PhD thesis to their successful completion, many in to publication to reputable peer-reviewed journals.

WHAT'S INCLUDED?

airport transfers

 If you fly in to Maputo airport, you will also need to book a flight to Inhambane with LAM airline.
We will pick you up from Inhambane airport ready for the start of your project - always the first Monday of every month.

​ACCOMMODATION

We have an allocated volunteer house, dorm and camping options for school groups and plenty of options for custom requirements with our partnered accommodation providers -
​all within a 5 minute walk of the MRC office. 
Just let us know what type of accommodation you would require, such as;

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided as a part of your project at the Marine Research Centre. Portions are generous and meals change daily. We are able to cater to vegetarian, vegan and allergy-restricted diets (please indicate in your booking enquiry). Check out a typical Monday in the restuarant in this sample menu;

​DIVING COURSES
​AND OTHER ACTIVITIES

​Our partnered dive centre, located right next to the office, offers a range of diving courses. Divemaster/Instructor certified staff always accompany every dive and adhere to the PADI buddy system. The dive centre provides all SCUBA equipment. Every dive is boat entry. Extra weekend dives can be booked on site for additional cost.
​Other activities offered in Tofo include;
  • surfing and surf lessons
  • ​horseback riding
  • kite surfing and kite lessons
  • quad bike hire
  • 4x4 car rental

    Sadly at this time, we don't accept anyone under the age of 18 for our volunteer or internship courses. Our marine bio field courses are a minimum age of 16.
    In which country is your permanent residence? We would like to know this in order to help you better if there are any travel enquiries or restrictions
    Let us know what diving qualifications you have, when you last went diving, what accommodation preferences you have or anything else you think might be relevant.
